In order to ensure a
prompt and effective
display of its most
popular items, Fair
Trade Egypt operates
a store in the
cosmopolitan
neighborhood of Zamalek,
in downtown Cairo.
There, you can find an
exhaustive yet
ever-changing selection
of goods from all
regions of the country.
The store offers walk-in
clients the opportunity
to experience these
hundreds of original
artisan goods in
person and find out more
about each item, each
artisan and each
community trading with
FTE. Browsing
around the shop becomes
a cultural tour of sorts
of Egypt that educates
the public about Fair
Trade and the
difference a few
well-spent Egyptian
Pounds can make to a
whole artisan
community.
Bright Bedouin purses,
kilims and
embroideries line
the walls of the store.
Al Fayoum
baskets float
above your head as you
breathe in the soothing
properties of the town’s
extra virgin olive
oil captured in our
cleansing bars.
Elegantly rustic Al
Nazla pottery
encourages you to give
your house plants a
proper home, and
opalescent Naqada
scarves remind you
that your wardrobe can
always use a splash of
color. Although hours
have gone into carefully
handcrafting these small
treasures, their prices
are reasonable to the
buyer while sufficient
to the artisans to
drastically improve
their quality of life.
It’s a win-win exchange,
a fair relationship
based on the principles
of Fair Trade.
Traveling to the
Cairo store isn’t
the only method to get
your hands on Egypt’s
traditional artisan
goods. One can just
as easily request to
import a list of
products. FTE
will gladly work with
you to make sure that
your purchase is
properly handled and
shipped from its Zamalek
stock rooms to Europe
and beyond. FTE
has successfully
established long-term
partnerships with
foreign importers for
almost a decade. We’re
here to help you help
artisans help
themselves. |
